Binnenland:  Bij Assen vindt de eerste aardbeving plaats in de noordelijke provincies

Buitenland:  Cliff Burton, bassist van de Amerikaanse metalband Metallica sterft na een ongeluk tijdens hun tournee in Europa, hun toerbus raakt van de weg, hij wordt uit het raam geslingerd en krijgt de bus over zich heen.

Sport:   Bij het WK hockey in Londen komt de Nederlandse hockeyploeg niet verder dan de zevende plaats. In de afsluitende wedstrijd, de laatste interland van strafcornerkanon Ties Kruize, wordt Polen met 7-2 verslagen.
