Binnenland: De televisiezender Nederland 3 begint met reguliere uitzendingen. Het commerciële radiostation Radio 10 start haar uitzendingen en is via een U-bocht constructie in Nederland te beluisteren.
Buitenland: Lancering van de Spaceshuttle Discovery (STS-26), de eerste Spaceshuttle vlucht sinds de ramp met de Challenger
Sport: Matt Biondi scherpt bij de Olympische Spelen in Seoel zijn eigen wereldrecord op de 100 meter vrije slag aan tot 48,42. Het oude record (48,74) stond sinds 24 juni 1986 op naam van de Amerikaanse zwemmer.
